The Champions of Rokugan Assemble

Previewing the upcoming L5R board game from Monolith

Enter a realm of heroism, magic, and steel, where warring samurai clans clash for power and prestige, duel for love and revenge, and fight to save the very soul of Rokugan.

The seven Great Clans have defended the Emerald Empire for a thousand years. Through times of peace and war, the samurai of the stalwart Crab, the elegant Crane, the enigmatic Dragon, the courageous Lion, the mystical Phoenix, the cunning Scorpion, and the far-ranging Unicorn have competed for power and influence. But as the trust between them fractures, those struggles turn ever bloodier. Former allies become fierce adversaries, and unlikely pacts are forged between ancient enemies.

While conflict and political intrigues divide the clans, the true threat awaits in the darkness of the Shadowlands, beyond the vast Carpenter Wall. There, in the twisted wastes, the minions of a fallen god plot the downfall of the Empire. Armies of demons, monsters, and undead are marshaling under a bloody banner, poised to conquer Rokugan at last. Will the forces of darkness prevail?

Coming soon to Kickstarter, the beautiful, high-end miniatures-based board game Champions of Rokugan from Monolith will allow one to five players to recreate the most epic moments of the Clan Wars. Today we are delighted to share with you some of the game’s newest and never-before-seen art for some of Rokugan’s most storied heroes and ignominious villains.

Legends of the Clan Wars

Hida Yakamo is the eldest of his siblings and the most like his father, the “Great Bear” Hida Kisada. Just as Kisada was a hot-tempered Crab Clan samurai in his early days, so is his son, and they both wield the clan’s signature weapon, the spiked club known as the tetsubō, to deadly effect. Yakamo proves his bravery as often as he can, leading expeditions into the Shadowlands to ambush goblin raiding parties before they get a chance to strike.

Shiba Tsukune is a warrior in a clan of pacifists, a student of the sword who is sworn to protect the scholars and shindōshi of the Phoenix. After her coming-of-age ceremony, she began serving as the bodyguard to the powerful earth elementalist Isawa Tadaka, whose studies into the blood magic of the Shadowlands have always been accompanied by peril to the body as well as spirit.

The position of the Isha confers great responsibility, as they serve as the foremost scout among the secretive and serpentine people known as the Naga. The Isha was chosen to defend the forests and reconnoiter the armies of the Shadowlands, the Great Clans, and any who would seek to harm the lord of the Naga or his retinue.

In life, Moto Tsume was an arrogant Unicorn cavalry general who believed he could defeat the Shadowlands. When he, his steed, and his horde perished in the attempt, their souls were eternally bound to the will of the Shadowlands. Now, he roves the Shadowlands with his undead followers, leaving nothing but death and destruction in his wake.

Of all the horrors to stalk the Shadowlands, the demonic creatures called oni are by far the most powerful and dangerous. With twisted horns, razor-sharp teeth, and enormous talons on their hands and feet, these bestial creatures resemble the very Hells in which they dwell.

This is only a small taste of what Monolith has in store. Take a look at some of the stunning new art from the game as well!
