The Voices of Shadowveil
Discover the actors voicing the video game’s heroes and narrator.
The last few weeks have seen incredible developments on Shadowveil: Legend of the Five Rings, the first-ever video game set in the fantastical realm of Rokugan! In Shadowveil, you play as the commander, one tasked with leading an expedition of Crab Clan samurai into the dangerous wastes of the Shadowlands to confront an ancient evil. You can learn more about this strategic roguelike game on its Steam page, and ask your questions of the developers in the official Discord server.
We’ve been thrilled to be a part of the voiceover recording sessions for Shadowveil, where we’ve gotten to watch the game’s two heroes come to life courtesy of their phenomenal voice actors. Today, we can finally reveal the talent behind Hida Sukune and Hida O-Ushi, whom you’ve already heard in the game’s official reveal trailer, as well as the voice actor playing the part of the narrator.
Todd Haberkorn as Hida Sukune
Hida Sukune believes that knowledge, when wielded properly, can be a weapon just as deadly as a katana. A devoted student of tactics, lore, and history, he is able to make connections and discern insights invisible to the common soldier. Although he will never be a great fighter like his older siblings due to his chronic illness and physical frailty, Hida Sukune is already proving himself one of most formidable strategists of his generation.
In Shadowveil: Legend of the Five Rings, Hida Sukune is played by the exceptionally gifted Todd Haberkorn. With over 700 credits spanning cartoons, commercials, audiobooks, video games, and film & TV, Haberkorn is a multi-award winning actor, director, and producer. As a voice actor, he is famous for playing the starring role of Natsu Dragneel in Fairy Tale, as well as his work on Dragon Ball Z, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and Sailor Moon. In video games, you’ve heard him voice Razor in Genshin Impact and The Drifter in Destiny 2.
Haberkorn brings nuance and depth to the character of Sukune, who is constantly striving against his weakness to prove himself in his father’s eyes. In Haberkorn’s performance, you can hear Sukune’s fear of letting down his older sister, not to mention the rest of the Crab Clan, as well as his determination to survive the Shadowlands using skill and cunning rather than brute strength.
Suzie Yeung as Hida O-Ushi
Where Hida Sukune has the brains, Hida O-Ushi has the brawn. There’s a reason they call her an “ox,” for few can match O-Ushi’s stubbornness and strength. The only daughter of the Crab Clan Champion is practically unstoppable once she starts swinging her warhammer. She knows she’s one of the greatest warriors of the clan, but growing up in the shadow of her older brother Yakamo has given her something of a temper and a chip on her shoulder.
Hida O-Ushi is played by the immensely talented Suzie Yeung. Yeung is a rising star in video games, best known for her roles as Yuffie Kisaragi in Final Fantasy VII Remake, Fuuka Yamagishi in Persona 3 Reload, and Eula Lawrence in Genshin Impact. She’s also voicing Ranma Saotome (girl form) in the English dub of the Ranma ½ Netflix remake, and previously stood out for her work in Chainsaw Man, Digimon Adventure 2020, and Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture.
Some of our favorite moments during the voiceover recording sessions have been those when Yeung embodies O-Ushi’s rebelliousness and attitude. And stay out of her way when she’s channeling her berserker rage! Yeung’s performance perfectly dramatizes just how passionate and protective O-Ushi can be when it comes to defending her family and clan.
Dave Fennoy as the Narrator
Besides Todd Haberkorn and Suzie Yeung, we have a tremendous amount of talent among the cast, including the award-winning voice actor Dave Fennoy, named by IMDB as “one of the 20 best male game voices of all time.” Fennoy is best known for his portrayal of Lee Everett, the playable character on Telltale’s The Walking Dead game. His performance earned several nominations including a BAFTA for Best VO Game Performance, and he won the Machinima and Dice Awards for best performance in a video game. He is also beloved for playing Lucius Fox in Telltale’s Batman and Batman Arkham Knights, Vol’jin in World of Warcraft, and Gabriel Tosh in StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, in addition to his many other credits on video games, films, and TV shows.
In Shadowveil, Fennoy serves as the narrator, spinning the tale of the siblings and describing the many events and obstacles they will encounter in the Shadowlands. The tone of his voice lends itself well to the game’s dark and foreboding atmosphere, and is perfectly suited for recounting the horrors of the wastes beyond the Wall. We can’t wait for you to experience some of his bone-chilling narration when the game releases later this quarter!
